Hello holiday season! Thankful for so many things, the least of which, perhaps, is that my belly is nice and full. This nice, little break gives me a second to update the blog!
For the past 2 months, I've been busy at work shooting the first season of American Idol on ABC. That's right, it's back! I shot the last 'final' Fox season of Idol, and was brought back to make this new season look bigger and better.
My tools of choice this season were an Arri Alexa Mini, Cooke S4i Prime Lenses, a MoVI Pro, and a ReadyRig to support whole thing. I had to operate with a small unit most of the time, as the show is quite the beast, and has many moving parts. Without a focus pulling AC, I attached a small finger focus adjustment. This allowed me to shoot with super shallow Depth of Field to create a more cinematic look.
We filmed all over the country in this time period, filming short, cinematic home stories to capture the lives of contestants that were auditioning. Even more fun were the creative show opens and closes, since these were more like small commercials. We travelled with very few lights, so finding great locations and great light that fit into our various segments was key.
As you'll see in a few screen grabs, we also filmed to an anamorphic frame 1:2.35
